Move over Ratchet and Clank. Move over Banjo and Kazooie. Move over Mario and Luigi! There’s a new platform/adventure game in town and you can play it right now on SHIELD. The highly anticipated Yooka - Laylee makes its worldwide debut today, and it’s this week’s new release on GeForce NOW!
This open-world platform game shares many similarities with the popular series named above, including its two stars: Yooka, a “sensible” green chameleon, and Laylee, a wise-cracking, big-nosed bat who rides on his good pal’s back.
You control them, and their awesome repertoire of special abilities built for platforming fun, as they embark on an epic adventure to stop a nefarious plot by “corporate creep” Capital B to steal the world’s literature and use it for his own personal profit.
Run, jump, puzzle and fight your way through massive, colorful worlds filled with special items to discover, and new enemies to outwit. And be prepared for more than your fair share of laughs as this game really piles on the humor, which should come as no surprise as it’s published by Team17 Digital - the same folks that brought you Worms WMD!
If you’re a gamer that honed your skills on any of the series mentioned above, or games like Sonic the Hedgehog (also available on GeForce NOW) and Donkey Kong Country you are in for a treat. Yooka - Laylee takes classic platform gameplay elements from these games and more and drops them into a open-world design that gives the game an overall nostalgic feel that also feels modern. It’s a “best of both worlds” design that just works - like peanut butter and jelly.
Yooka - Laylee’s design team shares many familiar faces from Rare that worked on the Banjo-Kazooie series, and the first clue is in the similarity of the games’ names, which are both a play on musical instruments. Other similarities to this and other series abound, which you’ll no doubt pick up as you play.

As you explore each level your goal is to find and collect different items, of which “pagies” are amongst the most important. These pages from magical golden books act as the primary currency in the game, and you use them to unlock new levels or expand unlocked levels with new areas. Golden quills, meanwhile, enable you to unlock new abilities for Yooka and Laylee.
These abilities include things like the Reptile Roll, which is handy for rolling up steep hills and knocking enemies over; the Buddy Slam, which lets you pound the ground to knock enemies off their feet so you can stomp on them; and The Glide, which lets you soar over long distances. There are many abilities you can discover throughout the course of the game, as well as scores of useful power-ups and collectibles. There are even hidden, secret arcade-style games to discover - completionists will be hard-pressed to get them all, and that’s all part of the fun.
The colorful cast of zany characters you meet along the way keep the humor flowing and the settings fresh, presenting you with new items, challenges and puzzles to solve.
And every player is guaranteed to have a unique experience with their play through of the game as there are so many different abilities you can choose to unlock and modify, and ways to expand each of the game worlds. Of course, this also means there’s plenty of reasons to go back for another go once you’re through.
Beating the game won’t be that simple - don’t let the colorful levels and characters and light mood fool you. Like many of the games Yooka - Laylee borrows bits and pieces from, its challenge level is fairly high - particularly with the later stages and “boss” enemies you’ll need to get past.
And this is why you might want to make use of the game’s multi-controller support to bring along a friend to help you through the game’s most vexing brain- and thumb-challenging moments. The game was built with co-op in mind and it’s a blast to experience together.
To play, navigate to GeForce NOW within SHIELD Hub: Yooka - Laylee will be in the New on GeForce NOW category. If you just picked up a new NVIDIA SHIELD TV, open the NVIDIA Games app (available on your home screen) and launch the game from the “New on GeForce NOW” category.
