Tomb Raider: Anniversary - Play it on SHIELD with GeForce NOW

By Steve Klett - Tue, Nov 29, 2016

Today, for the first time on SHIELD, you can experience the game that launched a franchise: Tomb Raider: Anniversary has been added to the GeForce NOW game library and is free for all members to enjoy.

Tomb Raider debuted way back in 1996, but don’t worry, this isn’t a straight port with “nostalgic” graphics. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is actually a complete reimagining of the original title that was remade in an improved version of the game engine used for Tomb Raider: Legend.

If you missed out on the original Tomb Raider, or are currently enjoying Tomb Raider: Legend on GeForce NOW, you simply must experience Tomb Raider: Anniversary. And there’s far more reason than simple nostalgia for Tomb Raider vets to give the game another go as well.

Experience, or re-experience, the birth of the Lara Croft legend with all-new, updated graphics, abilities, artificial intelligence and audio effects!

Relive the Action Game that Started a Franchise in Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Join Lara Croft for her epic hunt for the mystical Scion of Atlantis - a quest that will take her to ancient tombs and lost and forgotten cities in such exotic locales as Peru, Greece, Egypt and more. At every step of the way you’ll have to help Lara outwit the evil businesswoman Jacqueline Natlas, and her gun-toting henchmen, who are also vying for the Scion.

Rivals aside, simply navigating the environment is an immense challenge as the tombs are rife with traps and pitfalls, and there’s plenty of climbing, jumping and intense physical aerobatics to perform. Thankfully, in addition to Legend’s eye-candy upgrades, you also get access to Lara’s Legend abilities, which include her grappling hook, 45-degree jumps and shimmying abilities.

Lara Croft enters a temple

When Tomb Raider debuted Lara Croft was easily the strongest, most serious and highly skilled female protagonist to star in a video game. Thanks to the aforementioned upgrades from Legend, she can still stake the same claim in Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

Lara can slide along edges of cliffs, jump from one ledge to another, swing and dangle from ropes and bars and pull off tumbling maneuvers to avoid traps and projectiles. And she’ll need each and every one of these abilities to successfully navigate the game’s intense series of massive levels strewn with unique puzzles that challenge brain and brawn. Sometimes you’ll need to figure out how to do things like find switches and flip them in the right order to proceed. Most often, however, the puzzle is simply figuring out how to use Lara’s skills to get from Point A to Point B, safely.

Figuring out how to get past each obstacle, through exploration, is all great fun - thanks mostly to the smooth, catlike grace with which Lara pulls off her incredibly difficult physical feats.

And if it feels like Natlas’ minions, and the predators Lara encounters on her travels, are posing a stronger challenge than you remember that’s because they are. The artificial intelligence of enemies in the game has also been tweaked to provide a much more challenging, and realistic combat experience.
