NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet gamers can experience an enhanced version of T.E.C. 3001, the action game from Phoenix Game Studio. Nenad Rajkovic, co-founder of Phoenix Game Studio, explains how new technology is blurring the line between game experiences found on PCs and those available on mobile devices in this exclusive interview.
What were your goals heading into this game?
The game was planned to be made as an experiment and for a local mobile applications contest, targeted only for smartphones. Later on, we noticed positive responses from people who test played it and we decided to go further. It turned out to be smart decision.
What’s the storyline in this mobile game world?
In T.E.C. 3001 (Tesla Energy Collector), you are guiding a cutting-edge technology robot to collect virtual space energy leftovers for humanity.
Can you talk about the gaming experience and how it utilizes tablets like NVIDIA’s SHIELD Tablet and smartphone functionality?
Today we have different types of players, from casual to hardcore, and we can thank mobile devices for that. They made smaller games more popular and they showed how companies can be successful by making casual games. What is great about NVIDIA SHIELD is that it brought together the power of Android and a handheld device. It is now a way better experience to play more challenging games than ever before on a handheld device. I personally am not a fan of small, casual games on smartphones. Mobile devices won’t ever replace consoles or personal computers, but they have found their place when it comes to playing.
What does your game brings new to the genre?
In T.E.C. 3001 there are no limitations in steering the robot in the Free Run mode. Players are allowed to avoid obstacles and pass levels in many different ways. Also, the game is super fast and pushes players’ reflexes to their limits. All this makes the game extremely challenging. Only real hardcore gamers will try to complete across all the levels and to unlock all the achievements.
What excites you about what you can accomplish in mobile gaming today?
As a growing small company in the games industry, we are very excited about making games that will be interesting for everyone, regardless of their age or gender. Our goal is to make good quality games, and hopefully one day we can get funding to make AAA games.
How do you feel you're pushing things forward with this game?
This is our first game for NVIDIA SHIELD and we hope that it will give us a good reputation for our future projects.
How have you worked with NVIDIA on your game?
Our publisher Bulkypix linked us with some people from NVIDIA in order to port our game to NVIDIA SHIELD. NVIDIA provided us feedback, which was very important during the development and testing phases. Because we are new in gaming industry, we were honored to work with people from NVIDIA, and we see this as a great success.
What have they provided in terms of tech that has helped with development?
NVIDIA provided us a SHIELD device, so we could make, build and test our game on it. Without it, it would have been nearly impossible to deliver a game on this platform.
How does your game make use of the latest Tegra K1 technology?
We have added many new features that we couldn't add on other mobile platforms because of hardware limitations. Visual improvements we’ve implemented include: motion blur, shadows and normal maps. Tegra K1 allowed our game to look exactly the same as the PC version running smoothly at 60 frames per second.
How does this impact the gameplay experience across the platforms you’re targeting?
We wanted our players to experience great speed with everything working smoothly. The role of motion blur is to give players a better sense of speed. Having 60 frames per second enables smooth gameplay, which is very important for player reactions and game difficulty level.
What are your thoughts on NVIDIA Tegra K1 technology?
Tegra K1 is a powerful processor that will lead to a revolution on mobile game platforms. Developers are now allowed to make and represent their game without any graphical compromises and requirements. This processor makes games look like PC games. But you can carry them around with you.
What do you see that opening up for game developers moving forward?
With new technologies, there are many things that developer can focus on. We found the Oculus Rift device interesting and we believe VR will be the future of gaming. We’d like to make our future games for Oculus Rift.
How do you see Android TV opening up new opportunities for game developers?
So far, games for the Android OS were limited to devices with relatively small screens like phones and tablets, so games were focused more on gameplay than on graphical details. With Android TV, that limit is gone. Users can now play their favorite games on big screens. This will make future Android games pay more attention to detailed graphics, which will improve the quality of games.
What are your thoughts on the NVIDIA SHIELD and SHIELD Tablet?
Because both NVIDIA SHIELD and SHIELD Tablet are equipped with the latest NVIDIA Tegra K1 processors, they allow their users to play their favorite games anywhere they want with great graphics quality. You hardly notice any difference between playing the same game on a PC. Thanks to the Android OS, you can do everything else only much faster and with a better visual experience. Both devices are made from high quality parts, and have reasonable price points.
