It’s safe to assume that Rovio, the studio behind mobile gaming mammoth Angry Birds, can keep cranking out Angry Birds sequels and spinoffs and maintain a lot of the momentum it has gained since launching the franchise back in 2009. A few days ago, Rovio even boasted that the Angry Birds series has collectively surpassed a mind-boggling one billion downloads.
But the Finnish game developer isn't resting on its laurels as the company has just revealed that it is developing Amazing Alex, the first non-Angry Birds game from Rovio since 2009’s Nokia N900 game Bounce Evolution.
In Amazing Alex, players assume the role of a young boy named Alex, who -- in addition to being awesome -- must build a variety of objects to overcome obstacles and complete missions. While Rovio hasn't elaborated much on the gameplay it will feature, it will likely be in the vein of Casey’s Contraption, a physics-based puzzle game Amazing Alex is based on. Rovio also recently launched the official website for Amazing Alex, which features character art of Alex.
According to an article on Yle, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said that their aim with Amazing Alex is to deliver a game that’s the same caliber as Angry Birds. “The quality pressure is high," Hed said. "We want to maintain the high standard Angry Birds fans have come to enjoy."
While no solid release date has been confirmed thus far, Amazing Alex is expected to release sometime in the next couple of months.
