Developer Hexage has designed Reaper for mobile gamers across devices. The studio worked with NVIDIA to implement controller support for its SHIELD devices, as well as Google’s new Android TV. David Peroutka, founder of Hexage, explains what’s in store for gamers when they explore the Wilderness of Reaper in this exclusive interview.
What were your goals heading into this game?
We had a clear vision of a 2D action RPG platformer. There aren’t many games like that, even though it’s a mix of two of the most popular genres. Our main goal was to nail the action part of the game on touchscreen devices and gamepad controllers. We also wanted to offer a new, unexplored setting, rather than the usual generic fantasy worlds. We’re very happy with how the game turned out.
What’s the storyline in this mobile game world?
The game is set in a frontier world of Wilderness, where two warring factions, one civilized and secular, the other wild and religious are trapped in a never-ending war. The player enters this situation as a mercenary with just one ambition; to play both sides against each other and get rich in the process. Later revelations show that the world is on the brink of an apocalypse, and the player might be responsible for that. The storyline differs slightly based on the decisions the player makes throughout the game.
Can you talk about the gaming experience and how it utilizes tablet and smartphone functionality?
We’re proud of the multi-touch control scheme we’ve implemented for Reaper. It gives you the freedom to hold the screen any way you like, and it manages to be very precise without any on-screen buttons. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other games adopting this in the future.
What does your game brings new to the genre?
Besides the unique setting and main character, I’d say that it’s the way we’ve packed the epic RPG content -- hundreds of gear items, branching quests, skills, enemies, meaningful decision-making, surprise encounters etc. -- into a lightweight game. Reaper can be played in short and long sessions because it offers tons of content without the usual repetitive nature of RPG adventuring.
What excites you about what you can accomplish in mobile gaming today?
The power and scale that comes with the new tablets, Android consoles and TVs. The fact that you can enjoy the same game on your handheld, PC and TV without compromising quality is amazing.
How have you worked with NVIDIA on Reaper?
Thanks to the opportunity to cooperate with the NVIDIA team, there’s now a significant number of users who play Reaper on SHIELD.
What have they provided in terms of tech that has helped with development?
NVIDIA has provided us with a SHIELD, as well as invaluable feedback from testing the game.
What are your thoughts on the SHIELD?
From a developer’s perspective, SHIELD is our go-to platform whenever we implement and test the controller support in our games. Beside that, it’s currently the most compact and powerful Android console in its class thanks to the incredible connectivity.
