As cord cutters ourselves, we’re always looking for new ways to harness the power of the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV. Thanks to a new beta, Plex is now offering the ability to record free digital broadcast channels using a variety of HDHomeRun digital tuners from SiliconDust. So, whether you’re rocking the 16GB SHIELD or the SHIELD Pro, replete with 500GB of internal storage, you’re good to go.

The latest beta of Plex Media Server for SHIELD Android TV adds DVR functionality on SHIELD. This update will give SHIELD users the ability to set up recordings of over-the-air TV channels from any web browser and record them to SHIELD’s internal storage for playback from anywhere in the world. Earlier this summer, SHIELD became the only Streaming Media Player to support Plex Media Server and thanks to this new beta, SHIELD also becomes the only media streaming device to add native DVR support.

According to Jason Williams, Director of Product Management at Plex, "The launch of the DVR beta on NVIDIA SHIELD marks another milestone for us. Now, not only do you get one of the best Plex experiences in an all-in-one solution, you can free yourself from expensive cable plans and DVR boxes and watch your favorite shows anywhere from almost any device. This release is just the beginning and as we continue to expand our DVR and Plex for SHIELD capabilities. With the SHIELD’s ability to hardware decode MPEG2 and hardware encode h264 in Plex, we believe it will become one of the most attractive DVR solutions in market."

Get DVR and More with Plex Pass

Plex DVR is only available to Plex Pass subscription holders. In addition to Plex DVR, the subscription gives users access to premium program guide data for their Plex DVR, Mobile and Cloud Sync, Premium Music, full access to all Plex apps, and parental controls, just to name a few.

How to Adopt Extra Storage With SHIELD

Plex DVR will work on any SHIELD Android TV device, however, recording TV shows and movies requires a lot of storage capacity . Since SHIELD Pro has 500GB of built-in storage, it is the recommended device for Plex DVR. If you own a 16GB SHIELD Android TV, we recommend increasing your storage with a microSD card or USB hard drive or flash drive. You will need to setup the storage as internal storage by following these instructions.

How to Schedule Recordings Using the Web Interface

Setting up something to record is super simple. Open up your web browser on your desktop and head over to your Know what you want to record? Great, just enter it in the search field. Or, just go to the Program Guide, find what you want to watch and hit record (whether it’s a movie, a TV show, an individual episode, or a sporting event), confirm the settings and then “Confirm” the recording.

If you’re looking for more information about a show or movie, Plex also provides the description and other details, including cast information and ratings for movies. Once in the preplay screen for movies hit “Record” and subsequently choose in which library you’d like the downloaded movie to reside. TV shows and sporting events are slightly different in that they’re episodic and users can chose to record single episodes or an entire series. For instance, if you open the primary series, you’ll be presented with a myriad of details for it along with all episodes and events in the series.

If you don’t already own one, pick up an NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV today and join the cord cutting revolution with Plex Media Server.
