We have a real treat this week for fans of SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog series. There are three new games starring everyone’s favorite lil’ blue rodent - Sonic CD and Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Episode I and Episode II - available for you to play at no additional charge in the GeForce NOW membership library!
Sonic the Hedgehog delivered an entirely new platform gaming experience when it debuted on the SEGA Genesis in 1991. The blazing fast gameplay, and Sonic’s ‘tude provided a welcome contrast to the then-current king of the genre, Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros.
Many of us more “experienced” gamers (ok, “old folks”) likely still remember (proudly) the thumb blisters and callouses we developed making Sonic run, jump and spin his way through massive levels that felt like amusement park rides at times.
Sonic’s smash debut spawned more than 60 games over the years and sales for the series are in excess of 100 million units, easily making it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time.
Jump into Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and it won’t take you long to see evidence of Sonic’s Genesis DNA imprinted all over the place. The fast, 2D side-scrolling action will be very familiar as will the spin-dash mechanics and shield, invincibility and speed-shoe power-ups.
Your nemesis, Dr. Eggman, will also be familiar. However, this time he’s out for blood - yours! He’s gone back and revisited many of his nefarious creations from previous games and fine-tuned them all with the singular goal of getting rid of Sonic once and for all. You, of course, will have to throw a wrench in his plans.
What will be unfamiliar, perhaps, is Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s episodic nature - Episode I debuted in 2010, and the story then continues in 2012’s Episode II. In each episode the goal is the same, to outwit Eggman and his deadly machines, culminating with yet another deadly face-off with Metal Sonic (who made his first appearance in Sonic CD).
Episode II also introduces Sonic’s sidekick, Tails, to the mix. Unlike in Sonic CD, Tails is not a playable character but is instead a helpful companion that travels with you at all times and helps you to do things like reach high places, or roll together in a ball for a faster and more powerful spin attack.
This is good because you’ll need all the help you can get to defeat Eggman this time!
Sonic CD represents a great way for you to re-experience some classic Sonic the Hedgehog moments while introducing Sonic’s roots to any younger gamers in your family. The gameplay definitely holds up and Sonic’s “need for speed” remains unrivalled.
SEGA re-built the game from scratch to deliver HD visuals and support for today’s widescreen displays. There are also several filter options that change the game’s overall look; a Sonic the Hedgehog 2-styled spindash option is now available in-game; and you can now unlock Sonic’s pal, Tails, by beating the game once. The rest is the now-classic Sonic gameplay you know and love from the Genesis era.
As Sonic you’ll need to work your way through levels littered with obstacles and enemies to defeat your arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman, once again. The evil doc has hatched a plan to control time itself, and the fate of Little Planet will be determined by the choices you make throughout the game.
To win the day you’ll need to make use of the time travel gates found throughout each level to battle Eggman’s minions in the past, present and future - each period artfully represented with different layouts, colors and bad guys.
Re-discover why Sonic CD is widely regarded by critics as one of the best 2D platform games of all time!
