Shadwen comes from Frozenbyte ‒ the same folks that brought us the Trine series. And you can see the influences of those games in the environment-based puzzles, pacing, and visual style.
You are Shadwen, an assassin on a quest to kill the king. On your way to do your dirty work, you run into an orphan girl, Lily, and elect to let her follow you on your journey. This scenario immediately brings consequences to your actions: Do you simply kill that guard, and risk Lily’s trust and innocence, or do you try to find another way to your goal and keep your real purpose masked?
Lily, effectively, acts as your “conscience” and, hopefully, will encourage you to find non-lethal solutions to the challenges this stealth/action game presents.
And, also like in the Trine games, physics matter: you can topple over crates and send barrels rolling from on high to take out guards, or plant bombs to create all sorts of environmental mayhem. Simply experimenting with all the different ways to manipulate the world around you is a big part of the fun.
There are many action games that give you the option to use stealth or brute force to get past obstacles, but relatively few that deliver in-game consequences for your choices. From the start of the game through to the end, you’ll see the implications of the difficult choices Shadwen forces you to make.
The guards in this dark and gritty medieval province are ruthless ‒ if they see you coming they’ll sound the alarm and odds are it’s game over. Good thing there are plenty of fun ways to prevent this!
For starters, time only progresses when you’re moving, which gives you all the time you need to plan your moves ‒ you can even pause in mid-air to mull things over. Even better, should you make a mistake ‒ and you will ‒ you can rewind the clock and try again. This is also useful if you just want to see if you can pull off a different move, or solve an encounter in a different way.
Your choices to take the lethal or stealth approach will change the progression, and eventual outcome of the story, along with determining your relationship with Lily.
As a professional assassin, it should come as no surprise that Shadwen has as the ability to traverse the city with style and relative ease, thanks to her grappling hook and impressive array of acrobatic skills. Often, you can use these skills to avoid trouble.
In the end, it’s up to you to decide how to put her skillset to use to achieve not only your ultimate objective, but also how you’ll protect your young companion in this exciting action game.
