New NVIDIA Games App Debuts on SHIELD

By Steve Klett - Thu, Jan 26, 2017

NVIDIA is rolling out a new app that makes it easier to find and play your favorite games on SHIELD TV, as well as discover new titles for you to enjoy.

Called NVIDIA Games, the app replaces SHIELD Hub as your one-click destination for gaming on SHIELD TV. This upgrade is being applied to the original SHIELD TV starting today, and we expect to have all of these devices upgraded to NVIDIA Games soon.

If you have auto-update enabled on your SHIELD TV, which is the default setting, this update will happen automatically. If not, you will need to manually check for an available update on Google Play.

Once this update is applied, you’ll find the NVIDIA Games app in the Games row on the home screen (shown above). Effectively, NVIDIA Games integrates all of SHIELD TV’s gaming categories and puts them all just a single-click away.

Note: SHIELD TV (2015) owners will get updated to the NVIDIA Games app on a rolling basis over a period of weeks starting January 26th, 2017. After this update, the SHIELD Hub row will be removed. Until this app update, the SHIELD Hub row will still be present. If an automatic update is not available yet for your system you can get immediate access to the NVIDIA Games app by joining the NVIDIA Games Beta Program.

If you just picked up the new NVIDIA SHIELD TV you’re set, as NVIDIA Games comes preinstalled on your system. SHIELD tablet and SHIELD portable devices will receive the update later this year.

The NVIDIA Games app replaces the SHIELD Games, GeForce NOW and GameStream tiles, which formerly resided as separate entries under the SHIELD Hub row on your SHIELD TV. Now you will see a new Games row that displays your downloaded Android games and recently played GeForce NOW and GameStream titles.

So, whether you’ve downloaded an Android game from Google Play, streamed a PC game from the cloud on GeForce NOW, or linked to your GeForce GTX gaming PC for in-home game-streaming with GameStream, you’ll find all your games instantly in NVIDIA Games. The app does not alter any of your games - it simply changes the way you access them. All your saves remain intact, and you can pick up and play where you last left off before the update.

More than 1,000 Games are Available to Play on NVIDIA SHIELD TV

There are more than 1,000 native Android games, including hundreds optimized for SHIELD, and 100’s more PC games you can stream on SHIELD with GeForce NOW and GameStream. NVIDIA Games makes it easy to get to your favorite games as quickly as possible.

Here’s all the great gaming content you can access within the NVIDIA Games app:

  • Exclusive Android Games: SHIELD is the best way to enjoy premium Android games—from family favorites and indie hits to advanced games with rich graphics and intense multiplayer action.
  • GeForce NOW Games: Stream the incredible performance of GeForce GTX 1080 gaming graphics to your SHIELD device with the next-generation GeForce NOW. It’s instant gaming satisfaction, with no downloads or patches. Your first month of service is free, then it is just $7.99 per month.
  • NVIDIA GameStream Games: Cast your library of PC games from your GeForce GTX PC to your SHIELD device for a big-screen living-room experience. Enjoy direct access to Steam Big Picture.

The Play now row within the NVIDIA Games app visually tracks all the games you’ve played recently on your SHIELD so you can return to them quickly.

When you launch NVIDIA Games you’ll notice a series of categories shown vertically in the left-hand pane. If you’ve already installed an Android game, or played a GeForce NOW or GameStream title, Play now is selected by default. This row visually tracks all of your most recently played games, so you can return to them quickly. Streamed games will be tagged with GeForce NOW or GameStream in the bottom of the game tile, so you can can easily identify their source. Simply click on any title in this row to start playing.

Next up is My library, which contains all the SHIELD-optimized Android games that you have installed, all games included with your GeForce NOW membership, all games you purchased via the GeForce NOW store, and all your GameStream-enabled titles.

Note: Your SHIELD TV supports in-home game-streaming from an NVIDIA GeForce GTX gaming PC via NVIDIA’s GameStream technology. If you have not tried this yet, you can do so easily by navigating to My library > GameStream. More information is available here.

You can use voice search within NVIDIA Games to find a particular title, too. Simply press the NVIDIA button on your SHIELD controller to access voice search at any time. For example, say “The Witness” and the game tile will load - then simply click to play if you own it, or follow the prompts to purchase the game.

NVIDIA Games Categories Help you to Quickly Find New Games to Play on SHIELD

From here, the app breaks the games down into categories and genres to further help you identify new games that you may be interested in. For example, “New GeForce NOW games” highlights recent releases on NVIDIA’s cloud-gaming service, while “New Android games” highlights new native Android games that have been optimized for SHIELD.

Use NVIDIA Games categories to quickly find new games to play - such as family-friendly titles.

Looking for a game for your kids? Check out the “Fun for kids” category for quick, and safe, family-friendly picks. Can’t get enough of Batman? Check out “Be the bat” for a list of all games that star The Dark Knight.

Take some time to browse all the available categories and, after a little while, we’re sure you’ll agree that NVIDIA Games represents a much more convenient method to play all your favorite games on SHIELD, and a great way for you to discover new games you will enjoy.

If you don’t already own one, pick up an NVIDIA SHIELD TV today.
