Speed, Stunts and Dirt Collide in MX vs ATV Reflex on NVIDIA SHIELD

By Steve Klett - Tue, Jan 27, 2015

Racing games that put you in fancy cars for highly technical spins around asphalt tracks are nice and all, but sometimes you want to kick dirt into your opponents’ faces on your way to the finish line. MX vs ATV Reflex lets you do that, and more—and it’s available to play right now on NVIDIA SHIELD.

This is not your typical dirt track racer, either: MX vs ATV Reflex features a unique control scheme that challenges you to use each of the twin thumbsticks on your SHIELD portable, or SHIELD controller, for different purposes. The left stick controls the handlebars on your motocross bike or ATV and the right stick controls the rider’s body movement. This lets you control the vehicle and rider separately, which gives you a finer degree of precision when leaning into turns, for example, to get that extra edge.

The “Reflex” controls also come in handy for pulling off tricks and recovering from hard landings, which is vital because getting to the finish line first isn’t enough in many of MX vs ATV’s events. You also need to get there in style, pulling off tricks and stunts where opportunities present themselves to show-up your competition as they eat your dirt.

And the more you race around a track, the more dirt and mud you will kick up, thanks to real-time terrain deformation, which means that soft dirt gets moved around, mud uncovered, and lines change as races progress. Blindly follow the same path around a track and you’ll soon find yourself flying over the handlebars!

To play, just navigate to the GRID Games menu inside the SHIELD Hub app, select MX vs ATV Reflex from the list of available titles, and hit the track. The GRID Games library now includes 35 games that you can play on-demand on your SHIELD device for free. And NVIDIA’s committed to releasing new games every week on #SHIELDTuesday—so mark your calendars.

GRID is an on-demand gaming service that streams a library of popular games to SHIELD devices in high definition, with fluid frame rates and low latency. GRID is like Netflix for games, and it’s available exclusively to SHIELD owners in North America and most of Western Europe for free though June 30, 2015. Coverage will be expanded to include Germany and the Asia Pacific Region next year.
