We are extremely excited this week to bring Marvel Heroes 2016 to SHIELD. This is the first massively multiplayer online game to be released on GeForce NOW, and it’s free for all members to enjoy. So grab your SHIELD controller and live out your ultimate super hero fantasy!
A free-to-play action role-playing game, Marvel Heroes is all about letting you be the hero. Choose your favorite character from the Marvel Universe - such as Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine, Hulk, Captain America, or Spider-Man - and join the fight to save the world from Dr. Doom. Created by the visionary behind the now-legendary Diablo, and with a story penned by comic legend Michael Bendis (Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, etc.), Marvel Heroes is a dream come true for all super hero and Marvel fans. Even better, you can team up with friends to fight Dr. Doom and his goons!
If there’s one thing you can always count on with super heroes, it’s that they are always ready to fight the good fight whenever and wherever evil dares to raise its ugly head and threaten peace, justice or simply ordinary citizens’ daily lives. So, when that dastardly Dr. Doom gets ahold of The Cosmic Cube and threatens to use it to reshape the world in his image, and enslave the planet, super heroes from across the Marvel universe band together to stop him.
Naturally, stopping Dr. Doom’s plans is easier said than done, and this quest will span dozens of hours and take you to some of Marvel’s best-known locations to battle Doom and his villainous minions. You’ll visit such locales as Hell’s Kitchen, Mutant Town, Doomstad and Asgard fighting bad guys like Man-Ape, Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, Red Skull, Hydra and more.
The main hubs, or bases for the super heroes, in the game are the Avengers Tower, X-Mansion, Hellcarrier and Odin’s Palace. You’ll gather, prepare and embark on various missions with other players from these locations and unlock more of the story, as well as new characters to play as, as you progress.
A the start of the game you have a stable of a dozen heroes to choose from, which includes:
You can unlock up to a total of 50 playable heroes as you play the game via in-game drops, which is the process through which you gain “loot” in game. Similar to Diablo, when you fight a group of enemies in Marvel Heroes and defeat them, they might drop goodies that include new playable characters. These include: Ant-Man, Black Cat, Captain Marvel, Deadpool, Emma Frost, Hulk, Rogue, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, and more.
And you can also unlock a variety of “Team Up” non-playable characters, which are heroes you can summon to aid you when things get particularly dire, which bring the total number of heroes in-game to more than 100.
In addition to characters, loot drops may also give you powerful artifacts or runes that bolster particular abilities for your character or make certain weapons more deadly. Some of these items are extremely common, others extremely rare and extremely powerful, and it’s the quest to collect the rarest goodies that compel many fans to continue playing the game long after the main quest is finished.
The heroes pretty much split up into melee or ranged classes, with each character possessing unique abilities for their speciality. As you play you gain experience, which in turn “level-ups” your character. In Marvel Heroes, you get power points to spend on your character’s abilities with each level gained. And each character has three “power trees” you can spend these points on. You can spread points across all three to develop a balanced character, or spend them all on a single tree to specialize on a given trait - such as trick arrows for Hawkeye, perhaps.
Just about anything in-game from the characters and their costumes to artifacts and power points can be earned by simply playing the game. However, you can attain certain items more quickly, or unlock new heroes directly, through various micro-transactions that involve real world cash, which is typical of most free-to-play games.
Before you play Marvel Heroes for the first time on SHIELD you will need to establish a game account, which you can do here. Accounts are free, and this is where you choose your in-game player name, email associated with your account and choose a password. (If you already have an account, you do not need to do this again.)
Once you’ve setup your account you may launch the game on GeForce NOW. Navigate to GeForce NOW within SHIELD Hub: Marvel Heroes will be in the New for Members category. If you just picked up a new NVIDIA SHIELD TV, open the NVIDIA Games app (available on your home screen) and launch the game from the New on GeForce NOW category.
When you launch the game you will be prompted to login with your Marvel Heroes account. To do so, long press the Start button on your SHIELD controller to call up the virtual keyboard on your TV. You can then input your account name and password using the controller. Alternatively, you can connect a USB keyboard to your SHIELD TV and use this to enter your account details. Note: You can also use either of these methods to access the various in-game chat options.
We also recommend you spend some time customizing the gamepad controls to add shortcuts for calling up the in-game social menu, to be able to quickly access things like team chat, and one for closing all open windows.
To do this, go to Options>gamepad and scroll through the available open keypress options. Select the keypress option you’d like to use and click the drop-down modifier menu to find the command you’d like it to activate - such as Social Menu and Close All Windows, which is shown in the screen above. This way you can easily open chat windows and then close them quickly to get back to the action - without needing to use a keyboard.
There are a lot of custom command options so take some time to review them and select those that are most useful to how you play the game. And remember, at any time in-game you can call up the virtual keyboard by long-pressing Start, and then you can show/hide the keyboard by pressing the Y button.
