LucasArts’ Grim Fandango achieved instant cult status in the adventure game space when it debuted in 1998. The game’s originality and art design scored a huge hit with fans and critics alike. Fan interest remained so strong through the years it spurred the recent release of a remastered version, which is this week’s new GeForce NOW release on SHIELD Streaming Media Player.
You are Manuel "Manny" Calavera, travel agent at the Department of Death. You’re stuck in a dead-end job (pun intended) selling luxury travel packages to the deceased for their journey to the afterlife. You uncover a nefarious plot that’s preventing your clientele from receiving their just rewards, and set out to make things right. In the process, you just might earn your own first-class ticket to eternal rest.
We can pretty much guarantee that you’ve never played an adventure game quite like Grim Fandango, which combines elements of film noir and Mexican folklore with brilliant writing, memorable characters, a truly unique artistic design, and a healthy dose of appropriately dark humor. This is all backed by tight controls, glorious re-painted high-res character textures, new dynamic lighting, and an all-new version of the original’s classic musical score that was recorded with a full live orchestra.
The development of the original game was led by Tim Schafer at LucasArts and the remastered version by Schafer’s game studio, Double Fine Productions, which created the quirky platformer Psychonauts, and Brutal Legend (a current GeForce NOW membership game). Indeed, Schafer’s adventure game roots dig deep – his credits also include the Secret of Monkey Island series, Full Throttle, and Maniac Mansion.
If you’re at all familiar with any of these adventure games you already know you’ll need to explore every nook and cranny of the gameworld to find various objects you need to solve puzzles and finish quests. And the solutions are often, well, a bit bizarre at times. The remastered version plops you into the game without the benefit of the original’s thick manual that was chock full of game tips and hints. Not to fret, if you get stuck, here’s a comprehensive Grim Fandango walkthrough that might help.
Grim Fandango Remastered is available for $14.99 in the GeForce NOW store. In addition to unlimited streaming rights on GeForce NOW, that price includes a digital download code for GOG.com that you can use to install the game on a local PC. We have no doubt that you’ll find plenty to enjoy in this timeless PC classic, which provides a unique streaming experience in it’s remastered format on SHIELD.
To play, navigate to the GeForce NOW menu within SHIELD Hub on your SHIELD Android TV, portable or tablet. You’ll find Grim Fandango Remastered in the Buy and Play Instantly category.
Note: The game launches in 4:3 aspect mode, which is the native format of the original game. If you wish, you may switch to 16x9 aspect mode via the game settings (Settings > Special Features > Aspect).
