If most first-person shooters leave you wanting even more realism, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising may just be the game for you. It's this week's new release on GeForce NOW, and members can stream it for free on their SHIELD device of choice.
Set several years in the future, Dragon Rising depicts a struggle between the U.S. and China over control of the fictional Sakhalin islands. What begins as a relatively small conflict is threatening to erupt into a global conflict over oil concerns - and, as one of the U.S.'s "boots on the ground", it's up to you to help prevent this from happening.
To accomplish this goal, you'll need to take on multiple roles including tank commander, special forces operative, helicopter pilot, and Marine rifleman. Just don’t think you'll find success with Rambo-style tactics. Rushing into the teeth of enemies that outnumber and outgun you will result in one thing - your quick death. Dragon Rising places a great deal of emphasis on realism, which roughly translated, means one shot can and will often kill you.
This means that patience and planning will win the day, more often than reliance on pure twitch skills. Action is slower-paced and much more deliberate than you might be used to - and there are real consequences to getting injured. For example, get shot in the foot and you may have a limp and lose some speed after patching yourself up.
There's even a hardcore difficulty mode that removes all the head’s up display data, forces you to remember your ammunition count, and removes the checkpoint-based save system. Die and you start the mission over from the start!
When it comes to the missions themselves, you'll need to choose the right weapons for the job, manage your supplies carefully, and rely on the support of your AI-controlled squadmates to complete objectives. And these range from basic short-range recon tasks, to taking out complex hard targets.
Fans of this first person shooter genre will no doubt appreciate the attention to detail present in the more than 100 weapons and vehicles modelled in the game. Plus, the option to jump into a variety of multi-component vehicles like tanks and armored personnel carriers doesn't hurt either!
